Why Socktober

1. Personal Motivation

I’m the kind of man who always wears out the heels of my socks. No matter how new, they soon thin and split, leaving my skin exposed. Perhaps it reflects the way I move through life. Thankfully, I can replace my socks but for many people, a simple pair of clean, warm socks is a luxury. Without them, feet are vulnerable to cold, blisters, and infections that can escalate into serious health problems.

2. Why Sock-Tober

The idea for Sock-Tober came after reading that socks are among the most requested items for people living on the streets or in shelters. My goal is to use Rideau Lakes Radio to raise awareness and collect 500 new pairs of socks during October, which will be distributed to those in need.

3. Drop-off & donations

Life is Good Westport will serve as the official drop-off point starting October 1st. We are also accepting online cash donations, which will be used to purchase socks for distribution.

4. Goal & personal challenge

My goal is to collect 500 pairs of new socks by October 31st. If I fall short, I will take to the streets of Kingston on November 1 and 2, with only a Sharpie and warm clothes, to attempt to achieve the goal.

5. Distribution & reach

We are partnering with Loving Hands Kingston. Founder Maryann Ruttan works with local caseworkers to ensure socks will reach those who need them most. While our initial focus is Kingston, their reach extends to smaller communities like Verona and Tamworth. Since Rideau Lakes Radio broadcasts to Canada, the USA, and Australia, we hope to inspire a larger impact beyond Westport and the Rideau Lakes.”

6. Socks & community involvement.

All new, warm socks are welcome. Individuals, schools, and businesses can support by donating socks or funds to purchase them preferably from local Canadian sources. Visit rideaulakesradio.com to contribute. This year, our radio team, in partnership with Maryann Ruttan of Loving Hands Kingston, is coordinating the initiative.
